Abstract

The article deals with the issues based on polysemy of linguistic terms in different language systems. The fundamental property of the language is emphasized, its ability to "transmit the infinity of human experience by limited means", which is manifested precisely in its ambiguity. The main causes and origins that gave rise to polysemy in the language are analyzed. Specific examples of polysemantic words are given and the reasons for their use are explained. The essential role of the context for identifying the individual meanings of a polysemantic word is emphasized.
