Abstract

This study investigated the impact of Emotional Intelligence and Conflict Management in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two research hypotheses. This research work uses descriptive survey design method. The population of this study consists of 1050 leaders from the various clans in Abua/Odual Local Government Area and the sample size of 300 arrived using the Taro Yamane scientific formula. The instrument used in the study was a questionnaire with four Point Likert-scale for effective and adequate data collection and analysis. The adopted instrument was Conflict Management and Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire in Abua/Odual Local Government Area (CMEIALGA). The data was collected using the designed instrument and was analyzed utilizing Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 21). The research questions were analyzed by descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation whereas the hypotheses were analyzed with linear regression. The findings revealed that emotional intelligence plays a huge role in conflict management all over the world but the Abua/Odual local government Area’s leaders are yet to integrate and internalize emotional intelligence in the process of conflict resolution. It is suggested thaat the Abua/Odual leaders should incorporate emotional intelligence in the process of resolving conflicts among the citizens thereby creating room for unity, peace and harmony in order to promote sustainable development in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.
