This article discusses issues related to the interpretation of the concept of "folk thought" in the aspect of the problems raised by L.N. Tolstoy in his epic novel War and Peace. The idea of national unity, its prerequisites and historical basis are analyzed on the example of the "folk" characters of the novel by Platon Karataev and Tikhon Shcherbaty
