Environmental Challenges and Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Students in Enugu State

The study examines environmental challenges and academic performance of public junior secondary school students in the study area. The research design which was used in this study was descriptive. A sample of 320 proportionally selected respondents or teachers from 16 junior secondary schools spread across 3 Educational zones (via Enugu, Nsukka, and Udi) in the study area participated in the study. A 45 item three expert validated self-structured 4-point rating scale instrument titled “Environmental Challenges and Academic Performance of Students Inventory” (ECAPSI) with a reliability coefficient of 0.861 (using Cronbach Alpha (ra) method) was used to collect the data analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the five research questions (with a criterion mean cut off of 2.5), while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that: teachers did not differ on the perception of influence of classroom environment with (t(285, .025)=1.872, p=0.172), location of school (t(285, .025)=.198, p=0.657), psycho-social environment (t(285, .025)=.627, p=0.429), adequate infrastructural facilities (t(285, .025)=.376, p=0.540), and strategies (t(285, .025)=.176, p=0.675) on the academic performance of public junior secondary schools in the study area. The study recommended amongst others that school management should ensure that the classroom environment is properly lighted, ventilated, and orderly to improve learning quality and academic performance in public junior secondary schools. Alongside, proper school pre-construction assessment should be conducted to ensure schools are built in a serene, quiet, or peaceful environment that will put teachers and students in the right emotions and mood that will positively affect teaching and learning leading to higher academic performance among students.
