Abstract

Performance is the ability of a project to deliver intended outcomes while meeting the constraints of scope, cost and quality. Projects are successful if they are completed on time, within budget, and to performance requirements. Ideally, the role of leadership in project management encompasses a wide range of activities, including effective planning, task coordination, overseeing projects, inspiring team members and making decisions vital to setting up a plan of action for project implementation. Nonetheless, the various leadership styles employed in construction projects show a lot of inconsistency to project success. Essentially, the general objective of the study is to establish the effect of project leadership styles on performance of construction projects in Thika, Kiambu County. The study examines how project performance is determined by the various leadership styles; transactional, transformational, democratic and authoritative style. Notably, the study is underpinned by the transactional, transformational and behavioral theories of leadership. Admittedly, the researcher was limited to secondary data. From the findings, there was a positive relationship between project leadership styles and project performance. Leadership styles all had a positive correlation with project performance. Resultantly, the study concluded that there was a significant relationship between project management leadership styles and performance of construction projects. Consequently, the study recommended that: effective leadership skills to be acquired by all project staff. Lastly, the study suggests that further research should be carried out to establish the other factors that are attributed to the performance of Construction projects since the current study only examined the leadership styles.
